Elbow pain can sometimes be a sign of something more serious than just a minor strain or overuse injury. If your elbow pain persists for more than two weeks, is accompanied by numbness, tingling, unexpected weakness in your arm and/or hand, or if the area around your elbow is inflamed and swollen—these are all signs that you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
Additionally, if you experience severe and persistent pain at night, particularly when you’re sleeping or trying to rest, or if you have difficulty moving your arm or hand due to the pain–these too are indicators that something more serious may be going on with your elbow.
If you have any of these symptoms in addition to your elbow pain, it’s important to seek medical care right away so that any underlying conditions can be identified and treated quickly and effectively.
Some possible causes of these symptoms include fractures, tendonitis (inflammation of the tendons), bursitis (inflammation of the bursae), nerve entrapment syndromes such as Cubital Tunnel Syndrome (entrapment of the ulnar nerve) and Radial Tunnel Syndrome (entrapment of the radial nerve).
Other potential sources include arthritis and other forms of joint damage or degeneration such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
