Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person has chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in the nerve roots for years. For unknown reasons, the virus may become active again, causing shingles. The illness usually starts with a tingling sensation followed by pain along the nerve pathway on one side of the body or face. A few days later, a blistery rash develops. The rash consists of small blisters that eventually turn into scabs. The pain and rash can last from 2 to 4 weeks. In some people, the pain persists long after the rash has gone away. This is called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN).
Laser treatment for shingles Herndon uses light energy to stimulate healing and provide pain relief. Class IV lasers are among the most powerful lasers used in physical therapy. Several studies have shown that laser therapy is effective in treating PHN. A 2008 study found that patients who received laser therapy had a significant reduction in pain compared to those who did not receive laser therapy.
A 2010 study showed that patients who received laser therapy had a significant reduction in both pain and itching associated with shingles compared to those who did not receive laser therapy. Class IV lasers are an effective treatment option for patients suffering from shingles and PHN.
